Feeding raw is easy to start and hard to get right. Building meals yourself means balancing meat, organ and bone, then covering the vitamins and minerals most homemade recipes miss.
Pre-made raw dog food meals do that work for you, but they differ a lot in price, life-stage suitability and how they control bacteria. And a bag’s price says little about what a day of feeding costs.
We compared four ready-made options on those points. Every price below is converted to cost per day for a 50 lb, moderately active adult dog eating 1,000 kcal a day, using Amazon prices checked in September 2026.
- Best Pre-Made Raw Meal Delivery → We Feed Raw — ~$10.90–$11.80/day
- Best If You Don’t Want to Handle Raw Meat → JustFoodForDogs Fresh Frozen
— ~$13.60/day
- Best-Value Shelf-Stable Raw (Adult Dogs) → Instinct Freeze-Dried Raw Meals — ~$15.66/day
- Best for Puppies and Picky Eaters → Stella & Chewy’s Chicken Dinner Patties — ~$21.72/day
Daily cost estimates assume 1,000 kcal/day for a 50 lb moderately active adult dog, using Amazon prices checked September 2026 and We Feed Raw’s published starting rate. Prices change; confirm on each brand’s site before ordering.
What Are Raw Dog Food Meals?

Raw dog food meals are commercially made, uncooked diets formulated to be complete and balanced, so they can be your dog’s only food. They combine muscle meat, organs and bone (or another mineral source) with added vitamins and minerals, and they’re sold frozen or freeze-dried.
Not every raw product qualifies. Plenty of bags on the shelf are toppers or mixers meant to go on top of another food. Before feeding anything as a full meal, find the AAFCO statement on the label.
Pre-Made Raw vs. Making Your Own
Homemade raw gives you full control over ingredients. What’s hard is keeping it balanced: the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, trace minerals like zinc, vitamins D and E, and consistency from one batch to the next.
With a pre-made meal, you’re paying for that formulation work, plus pathogen control and portioning. The meat is only part of the price.
Frozen vs. Freeze-Dried vs. Gently Cooked
| Format | Storage | Prep | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frozen raw | Freezer, thaw in fridge | Thaw about 24 hours ahead | Lowest per day of the raw formats |
| Freeze-dried raw | Pantry (shelf-stable) | Serve dry or rehydrate | Highest per day |
| Gently cooked (not raw) | Freezer, thaw in fridge | Thaw and serve | Mid-range |
Best Raw Dog Food Meals
1. We Feed Raw: Best Pre-Made Raw Meal Delivery
We Feed Raw ships frozen raw meals to your door. The current lineup has five recipes: chicken, beef, turkey, lamb and duck. Its chicken and beef recipes are each labeled complete and balanced for all life stages.
The food goes through high-pressure processing (HPP), a cold-water pressure step that inactivates Salmonella and Listeria without heat, so it stays raw. HPP reduces risk rather than removing it, so kitchen hygiene still counts (more on that below).
It’s also the cheapest option here per day. Published plans start at $8.89 per pound, and the frozen recipes are reported at 47 to 51 kcal per ounce. For a 50 lb adult, that’s roughly $10.90 to $11.80 a day at the starting rate. Your quote will depend on your dog’s plan.
A subscription isn’t required. Besides custom meal plans, there’s a standard box you can order once. Feeding is simple: move patties from the freezer to the fridge about 24 hours before mealtime.
The freeze-dried beef and chicken recipes are formulated for adult dogs only. For a puppy, use the frozen recipes labeled for all life stages, and ask your vet to confirm daily portions, since puppies eat more per pound than adults.

Best For: Owners committed to raw feeding who want balanced, pre-portioned meals delivered.
Cost Per Day: About $10.90–$11.80 (50 lb adult, 1,000 kcal, starting plan rate)
Why It Made the List?
- Lowest cost per day in this comparison, with published plans starting at $8.89/lb.
- HPP safety processing inactivates Salmonella and Listeria without cooking the food.
- Chicken and beef are labeled all life stages, and a no-subscription box is available.
Key Specs
- Macros: Chicken recipe 13% protein / 10% fat (min, as-fed); frozen recipes run 47–51 kcal/oz
- AAFCO: Chicken and beef complete and balanced for all life stages; freeze-dried line is adult only
- Ingredients (chicken): Chicken heart, chicken backs, chicken leg quarters, chicken liver, vitamin and mineral mix, kelp
Honest Take
- Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot across 2,171 reviews, with 88% five-star.
- Price is the main sticking point, even for happy owners (Anthony Peters, Sep 10, 2026). One 3-star reviewer got two beaten-up boxes in a row (Sep 10, 2026).
- Most common owner report: healthier dogs and smaller stools (Joe, Sep 3, 2026), plus less itching after the switch (Winter, Sep 12, 2026). Most common complaint: the newer packaging is harder to open.
2. JustFoodForDogs: Best If You Don’t Want to Handle Raw Meat
JustFoodForDogs isn’t raw. Its meals are gently cooked and then frozen, and the brand has publicly argued against raw feeding.
It’s on this list because a lot of people researching raw meals are really deciding between raw and fresh-cooked. If you can’t have raw meat in your kitchen, this is the closest substitute.
The Turkey & Whole Wheat Macaroni recipe has the strongest nutrition claim of the four products. Its label says AAFCO feeding trials substantiate complete and balanced nutrition for adult maintenance, so it was fed to dogs in a trial, not only formulated on paper.
At Amazon’s 7-pack price, it costs $13.60 a day for a 50 lb adult, or about $11.06 with the larger 4.5 lb pack. To get your dog’s exact portion, use Just Food For Dogs’ food calculator. First-time buyers can get 50% off your first autoship order
.
Frozen packs keep up to 18 months, and an 18 oz pack needs up to 24 hours in the fridge to thaw.
The brand has one FDA-posted recall, from January 2018. It covered three other recipes (Beef & Russet Potato, Fish & Sweet Potato and Turducken) over possible Listeria in the green beans, and it has since been closed.

Best For: Owners who want fresh, whole-food meals without raw meat in the kitchen.
Cost Per Day: $13.60 (7-pack on Amazon; about $11.06 with the 4.5 lb pack)
Why It Made the List?
- AAFCO feeding-trial substantiation for adult maintenance, the only product here with it.
- Gently cooked, so there’s no raw meat to handle at home.
- Long freezer life: frozen packs keep up to 18 months.
Key Specs
- Macros: 10% protein / 4% fat / 1% fiber (min/max, as-fed, 69% moisture); 1,741 kcal/kg (49 kcal/oz)
- AAFCO: Feeding trials, adult maintenance
- First 5 ingredients: Turkey, wheat macaroni, carrot, broccoli, zucchini
Honest Take
- Rated 4.1/5 on Amazon across 181 ratings.
- Service complaints: some Amazon orders arrived thawed (marie e. dillon, Apr 7, 2026), and one reviewer says the Clean Bowl Guarantee isn’t honored on third-party orders (DBATC, Oct 2, 2025). Buying direct keeps the guarantee in place.
- Most common owner report: excited mealtimes, even from picky senior foster dogs (PeakePups, Mar 15, 2026). Most common complaint: unexpected autoship charges, per Trustpilot reviews.
3. Instinct Freeze-Dried Raw Meals: Best-Value Shelf-Stable Raw
No freezer space? Freeze-dried raw is the easiest way to feed raw, and Instinct is the cheaper of the two freeze-dried meals here at $15.66 a day with the 25 oz bag.
Amazon lists it as Instinct Freeze Dried Meals; the bag calls it FreshDried Raw Meals. It’s 85% meat and organs, with non-GMO fruits and vegetables making up the rest. Instinct runs all of its frozen and freeze-dried raw recipes through HPP.
This one is for adult dogs. The Cage-Free Chicken recipe is formulated to AAFCO’s maintenance profile, so don’t use it as a puppy’s main food.
The only Instinct raw recall we found dates to July 2015. It covered frozen Raw Chicken Formula patties and bites after an FDA sample tested positive for Salmonella. The freeze-dried meals weren’t part of it.
Freeze-dried raw is dense in both calories and fat, and this recipe is at least 33% fat. If your dog has had pancreatitis or has a sensitive stomach, talk to your vet before switching.

Best For: Owners of adult dogs who want raw without freezer space, at the lowest freeze-dried cost.
Cost Per Day: $15.66 (25 oz bag); $15.28 with the 45 oz bag
Why It Made the List?
- Cheapest freeze-dried complete meal in this comparison.
- 85% meat and organs, with non-GMO fruits and vegetables making up the rest.
- HPP on every Instinct raw recipe, frozen and freeze-dried.
Key Specs
- Macros: 35% protein / 33% fat / 5% fiber (min/max); 4,698 kcal/kg (235 kcal/cup)
- AAFCO: Adult maintenance
- First 5 ingredients: Chicken, chicken liver, chicken heart, pumpkin seeds, carrots
Honest Take
- Rated 4.7/5 on Amazon across 561 ratings.
- Not every dog takes to it; one owner’s dogs wouldn’t eat it at all (Violet Valero, Jul 27, 2026).
- Most common owner report: picky eaters take to the chicken recipe quickly (Chelsey Williams, Jul 27, 2026). Most common complaint: crumbs in the bag, about 4 oz in one 25 oz bag (Barbara Eastin, Jun 5, 2026).
4. Stella & Chewy’s Chicken Dinner Patties: Best for Puppies and Picky Eaters
These freeze-dried patties are among the easiest raw meals to find in U.S. stores. Unlike Instinct, the chicken recipe meets AAFCO standards for all life stages, so you can feed it to a puppy.
Every Stella & Chewy’s product goes through HPP. Each batch is also sent to an outside lab for Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria testing and isn’t released until the results come back negative.
The trade-off is cost. At $21.72 a day with the 5.5 oz bag, or $19.14 with the 25 oz two-pack, it’s the priciest option here. Plenty of owners of bigger dogs use it as a topper instead of a full diet, as several of the Amazon reviewers below do.
The FDA’s archive shows a December 2015 Listeria recall of the brand’s frozen dinner morsels. We found no FDA-posted recalls after that.

Best For: Puppies, picky eaters, and owners who want an all-life-stages freeze-dried meal or topper.
Cost Per Day: $21.72 (5.5 oz bag); $19.14 with the 25 oz two-pack
Why It Made the List?
- All life stages, so it works for puppies as well as adults.
- HPP plus third-party batch testing for Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria before release.
- Easy portioning: 60 kcal per patty, as a full meal or a topper.
Key Specs
- Macros: 48% protein / 28% fat / 5% fiber (min/max); 4,420 kcal/kg (60 kcal/patty)
- AAFCO: All life stages
- First 5 ingredients: Chicken with ground bone, chicken liver, chicken gizzard, pumpkin seed, organic cranberries
Honest Take
- Rated 4.4/5 on Amazon across 3,500 ratings.
- Cost adds up fast as a full diet for several dogs (Ramona Burick, Aug 17, 2026).
- Most common owner report: picky dogs eat it when they refuse other foods (Bea, Sep 18, 2026). Most common complaint: bags arriving as mostly crumbs (Dan Parrish, Jul 8, 2026).
Raw Dog Food Meals Compared
| Product | Format | AAFCO life stage | Protein / Fat (min) | Moisture | Safety processing | Cost per day | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| We Feed Raw | Frozen raw | All life stages (chicken, beef) | 13% / 10% (chicken) | High (frozen) | HPP | ~$10.90–$11.80 | Committed raw feeders |
| JustFoodForDogs Turkey | Gently cooked | Adult (feeding trial) | 10% / 4% | 69% | Cooking | $13.60 | Raw-averse households |
| Instinct Freeze-Dried | Freeze-dried raw | Adult maintenance | 35% / 33% | 6% | HPP | $15.66 | Budget freeze-dried, adults |
| Stella & Chewy’s Patties | Freeze-dried raw | All life stages | 48% / 28% | 5% | HPP + batch testing | $21.72 | Puppies, picky eaters |
Cost per day assumes 1,000 kcal/day for a 50 lb moderately active adult dog. Amazon prices checked September 2026. We Feed Raw’s figure uses its published starting rate and a reported 47–51 kcal/oz. Protein and fat are as-fed, so products with very different moisture levels can’t be compared on those numbers alone.
How Much Do Raw Dog Food Meals Cost?

For a 50 lb adult, the meals in this comparison run about $11 to $22 a day. Frozen raw delivery costs the least. Freeze-dried costs the most, since you’re paying for shelf stability.
Small bags can mislead. A 5.5 oz bag of freeze-dried patties holds about 690 kcal, which doesn’t cover one full day for a 50 lb dog. Used as a topper it lasts several days; as a full diet, it’s gone before dinner.
How to Choose the Right Raw Meal for Your Dog
Check the AAFCO Life Stage First
Find “complete and balanced” and the life stage on the label.
- Puppies need an “all life stages” or “growth” formula. In this comparison, that’s Stella & Chewy’s patties and We Feed Raw’s chicken and beef.
- Adult dogs can eat either maintenance or all-life-stages food.
Frozen or Freeze-Dried?
Frozen is the better deal if you have the freezer room. Freeze-dried makes more sense for travel, small freezers, or topping kibble. Expect some crumbling with it; buyers of both freeze-dried products here mentioned it.
Consider Who’s in Your Household
Bacteria in raw pet food can make people sick, not just pets. FDA recall notices warn that people handling contaminated raw pet food are at risk, especially if they skip handwashing. Northwest Naturals’ August 2026 recall of two frozen chicken products is a recent example.
A few habits cover most of the risk:
- Wash up after every meal: hands, bowls and counters.
- Thaw in the fridge, not on the counter.
- Store raw pet food separately from human food.
If you live with young children, someone pregnant, or anyone with a weakened immune system, check with your vet before starting raw, and have those household members ask their own doctor. The cooked option above may suit your home better.
Transition Slowly
Switch over 7 to 10 days, adding a little more new food and a little less old food each day. Stella & Chewy’s publishes a schedule that goes from 25% new food to 100% over about 10 days. Soft stool for a few days during the switch is common.
Raw Meal Brands We Left Out
A few well-known raw brands didn’t make the cut:
- Northwest Naturals: FDA testing found Salmonella and Listeria in two frozen chicken products, recalled in August 2026.
- Darwin’s: a federal complaint, reported by trade publication PetfoodIndustry, alleges years of pathogen findings at its facility.
- Primal: it’s currently sold on Amazon through a third-party reseller. It also had a single-lot Listeria recall in 2022, and the FDA later sent a warning letter about its food safety plan.
FAQ
Are pre-made raw dog food meals complete and balanced?
Only if the label says so. Look for an AAFCO statement naming a life stage. Toppers and mixers aren’t meant to be fed alone.
Is frozen or freeze-dried raw better?
Neither is clearly better nutritionally. Frozen usually costs less per day. Freeze-dried is shelf-stable and easier to travel with, but it costs more and can crumble in shipping.
Are raw dog food meals safe?
They’re lower-risk with HPP, but not risk-free. High-pressure processing lowers the risk from Salmonella and Listeria without eliminating it, so careful handling at home is still necessary. If anyone in your home is immunocompromised, consult your vet before starting raw.
Can puppies eat raw dog food meals?
Yes, if the formula is labeled for all life stages or growth. Here, that means Stella & Chewy’s Chicken Dinner Patties and We Feed Raw’s chicken and beef. Instinct’s freeze-dried meals are for adults. Consult your vet to confirm portions for a growing puppy.
Can I mix raw meals with kibble?
Yes. Plenty of owners use raw as a topper. Instinct notes you don’t have to feed 100% raw to include it in your dog’s diet.
How do I thaw and store frozen dog food meals?
Thaw them in the fridge. We Feed Raw suggests moving patties there about 24 hours before feeding. JustFoodForDogs’ cooked meals keep up to 18 months frozen and shouldn’t be refrozen after a cold-water thaw.

- Adult dog, tighter budget, no freezer room → Instinct Freeze-Dried Raw Meals: the cheapest freeze-dried pick per day.
- Puppy or picky eater → Stella & Chewy’s Chicken Dinner Patties: works as a full meal or a topper at any life stage.
